Fashion lovers alike have a way of accumulating items over the years, causing overwhelming stockpiles in our closets so how can we keep everything neat and tidy? In addition to creating a virtual closet, there's a few things to consider.

This means it's important to optimize your closet with smart household storage solutions while cutting back on material purchases.

1) Purge Items

In the wardrobe, remove neglected clothing and accessories that have not been worn in the past 12 months. Complete the same cull process in the kid’s wardrobe to remove outgrown toys and clothing. Take inventory of kitchen items and food in the pantry. Remove any broken, duplicated or unused appliances and dishware and throw away foods past their expiration. Tame clutter in the bathroom by removing products not used in the past six months.

Hanging items in the wardrobe is one of the easiest ways to free up space. Coats and ski gear are not required throughout summer so save space by piling these items into vacuum bags and storing in the back of the closet, attic or garage. Cosmetic caddies, trays and plastic containers help organize toiletries and bathroom towels. Adding these under the cupboard creates order and saves space. Enhance organization by choosing containers with color-coded lids or personalized labels.

3) Add Dual-Purpose Furniture

Free up closet space in the home by adding new furniture items that offer function and storage. Avoid bedroom wardrobe clutter by purchasing a bed frame with drawer or shelving storage underneath. For the living room, add a functional sofa with hidden storage underneath. Opt for an ottoman or coffee table with storage space – perfect to store linens, game consoles, or other bulky items that often take up closet space. Add trunks to the foot of the bed for overflow clothing, shoes and hats.

Built-ins and wall shelving free up closet space while showcasing meaningful items throughout the home. Opposite of free-standing furniture, built-in cabinetry is assembled into the wall and provides a great deal of storage without making rooms feel smaller.
