Ireland Top 5

Our trip to Ireland is comprised of so many wonderful memories including #1, our stay at Ballyfin, long drives in the country and the folklore story telling night at the Brazen Head. I had imagined what it would be like before we left, but it far exceeded my expectations...The people were more than welcoming, the pace is MUCH more relaxed and the scenery is unmatched.

While it's hard to narrow down, I wanted to share my top 5 things to do/see while in Ireland:

The Long Room at Trinity College

This was not only my favorite sight from our Ireland trip but probably one of the greatest things I have ever seen. I've always dreamt of seeing a real life library that resembled the one that the Beast gives to Belle and this was even better.

Built in the 1700's, it is approx. 200 feet in length and filled with 200,000 of the library’s oldest books. When we walked in and saw it all for the first time, I had tears roll down my face...it was a slightly unexpected reaction, but I truly felt overwhelmed by the beauty and history that was surrounding me.

The Cliffs of Moher

This is a destination I had on my bucket list before we ever seriously considered going to Ireland in the first place. I remember seeing it in the Princess Bride and Harry Potter, reading about it in books and deciding it was a place I had to see. Standing 702 feet at their highest point, they stretch for 5 miles along the Atlantic coast of County Clare in the west of Ireland.

The human story and history of the Cliffs of Moher dates back at least two thousand years as the name derives from a 1st Century BC fort that stood where Moher Tower now stands. The old Irish word “Mothar” means ruined fort and it is this that gives the cliffs their name.

Killarney National Park

Killarney National Park is located beside the town of Killarney, County Kerry, Ireland. It was the first national park established in Ireland, created when Muckross Estate was donated to the Irish state in 1932. We visited Muckross House & Muckross Abbey, a 19th century Victorian Mansion and a Franciscan friary from approx. 1448, respectively.

The attractions are gorgeous but so are the walking paths in between - we chose the "adventure path" which led us through a forest along the lake where the trees looked like a set out of Into the Woods.

Quay Street in Galway

Galway is overflowing with charm, even if we couldn't escape the heavy mist/rain showers that loomed over us all day long. While I do wish the weather would have been nicer, we will never forget roaming Quay street and taking in all of its quaint details. We ate at the Pie Maker, the tiniest restaurant you will ever see, owned by an equally tiny blonde who creates Sheppard's pie from scratch on the spot. We wandered in and out of stores (most with gorgeous colored doors), visited some gorgeous churches and stopped by Galway Bay.

Gap of Dunloe

THIS place is what you think of when someone says Ireland. The Gap of Dunloe is a narrow mountain pass in County Kerry and within it are five lakes. We took a horse and buggy along the gorgeous 7 mile path which led to the winding road which makes the gap at the end. The landscape is absolutely unbelievable and it is so serene, almost hard to believe it's real. As you pass by the grazing sheep and the running waterfalls, it's so easy to forget the honking cars and ringing cell phones back home in Chicago...

How to Pack for Europe in the Spring!

Before I know it, I will be taking off for Ireland for the trip of a lifetime with my husband. Even though we have been pinning and gathering resources for days, it still does not feel real. Perhaps that's because of how spontaneous this decision was - with another challenging Chicago winter under our belts, we have been itching for a change of scenery and a break in the routine so we considered a few places on our must-go lists including Charleston, New Orleans and Austin, Texas...

Hours later, here we are with flights booked to Ireland...while it may be considered slightly irresponsible, we figured that's still allowed at this point in our lives. The responsibilities will only increase in the coming years (don't worry Mom, kids are still in the plan!) so we decided this was a great time to make the trip we've always dreamed of. We are so excited and I can’t wait to share the journey with you guys.

I have traveled overseas a few times before (England, London, Rome, Switzerland), so I am taking this opportunity to learn from my mistakes (including poor choices for walking shoes and trying to be stylish and not practical. I know, I thought this was stylish? Really?)

Plus, I read a great tip from Jess who just made the trip to Ireland...she suggested keeping everything in the same color scheme - that way everything you pack will be easy to mix and match.

SHOES: We plan on doing quite a bit of walking so running/walking shoes are a must plus a solid pair of waterproof boots and perhaps one pair of flats for dinner's out.

OUTERWEAR: The weather is currently in the high 40's-low 50's and it tends to be damp/windy so a few different outwear options sounds smart including a rain jacket, wind breaker and anorak jacket, all the perfect addition to various layers.

BAGS: Once we leave our home base in the morning, I don't anticipate being back unit the end of the day so a backpack is key to carry everything I need for sightseeing including my camera, wallet, brush, hand warmers and map.

ACCESSORIES: Sunnies, scarves & a beanie are great ways to add some flair to your outfit but also necessary for staying warm.

Weekend Wanderlust

Kaitlyn

I consider myself to be a homebody who frequently gets bit by the travel bug. It has always been more important to me to have a house to come home to than it is to live in a shack in order to travel the world, but that doesn't mean I don't love adventure. The problem is, I want to see and have it all...or is that just a good life plan? ;)

Santorini, Greece: I will admit it...My love for Santorini developed from watching Sisterhood of the TravelingPants. My husband never fails to remind me this is the reason I want to visit but I have no shame. There is something about the combination of the whitewashed stone architecture set against the deepest blue sea that is like candy for my eyes. I imagine renting Vespa's (because why wouldn’t we), fresh fish daily and epic sunsets. Sounds horrible, doesn’t it?

Antelope Canyon, Arizona: While this may seem random, I think it makes complete sense once you google this place. My girlfriend visited the canyon a few months back and without knowing much about it, her photos were enough for it to land a spot on my list. It looks like a (rookie) photographer’s dream and I can't stop dreaming about the pictures I could leave with.

A little history here: A long time ago, older Navajo's would probably pause before going in to be in the right frame of mind and prepare for protection and respect. This would also allow them to leave with an uplifted feeling of what Mother Nature has to offer and to be in harmony with something greater than themselves.

Quebec City, Canada: From art to history and gorgeous castles, I imagine Quebec City to be one of the most majestic destinations. Specifically, I would love to stay at (or just sip tea at) the Fairmont Château Frontenac. The photos I saw on the KJP instagram just solidified my thinking that this would be the perfect winter holiday getaway. Between the days filled skiing and the spa, I think my husband and I could definitely be happy putting our feet up by the fire here.

Lisa

As a stay-at-home mother of two who plans to move in the next 12-18 months, being on a budget is just the way it is right now. So weekend wanderlust is as close as I can get and I'll take it!

Maui, Hawaii: My entire life, I have always wanted to go to Hawaii. As long as I can remember it has been on my bucket list. Clear blue water, palm trees, beautiful scenery, and warm temperatures? Count me in! I'd love to renew my vows there on the beach and just spend time exploring looking for waterfalls and just loving life!

Cinque Terre, Italy: My grandma was born in Sicily and I've always wanted to go to Italy and see a bit of my heritage. I realize Sicily is not Cinque Terre, but how can you not want to visit there when you see photos of it? Everything is so colorful and full of life, it's just a place I've always wanted to see in person and not just in photos... one day.

Nashville, TN: Kaitlyn and I were just in Nashville last year. It was a family girls trip and to date, one of my favorite vacations. There is just so much musical history there and taking my kids to see the Ryman Auditorium would be amazing. Eating more fried pickles would be a must and just walking around feeling the positive vibe of Nashville again would make me very happy. I may just pop back in at the Frothy Monkey for a quick coffee and chat with some of the oh-so-nice locals. It's just such a friendly place, it makes you want to pack up and move there!

Kaitlyn's Honeymoon Essentials

As you read this, I am currently sitting on white sand sipping perfectly concocted drinks out of a coconut with my new husband (That word will be overused in the coming weeks, but rightly so I say!)

We were counting down the days until our excursion to the Dominican but with all the last minute wedding chaos, I realized how little time I was going to have to pack so to save you from a similar predictament, here are a few lovely ideas for a beach adventure...
